Polytrauma, as a life-threatening injury to various body regions, continues to be the leading cause of death until the age of 45 years. After polytrauma, massive bleeding with development of ahemorrhagic shock represents an additional life-threatening condition, leading to inadequate tissue perfusion and organ dysfunction The traumatic impact leads to generation of different "danger molecules" that trigger a local and systemic inflammatory response. Our group investigates the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms and focuses particularly on the role shock as major driver of the inflammatory response and cellular dysfunction. We investigate how dysfunction of both, the static defense (barriers) and dynamic defense (immunity) contribute to the development of the feared multiorgan failure with a focus on the lungs, gut and kidneys. Promising therapeutic immunomodulatory approaches are being pursued to improve the posttraumatic response and clinical outcome.
In the Emergency Room, the patient receives rapid synchronic diagnostic and care by an interdisciplinary expert team.
In close collaboration with the Dept. of Trauma Surgery (Prof. F. Gebhard) and Dept. of Anesthesiology (Prof. B. Jungwirth) the polytrauma study at Ulm Hospital evaluates the immune and organ response of the patient after severe tissue injury.
