Research

The major focus of our group is the discovery, validation and implementation of fluid biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer´s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Parkinson´s disease etc. to support (early) diagnosis, prognosis, disease monitoring and development of novel drugs.

We use mass spectrometry and immunoassays to study biomarker candidates mainly in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood (serum/plasma). We have a high technical expertise in the use of mass spectrometry in biomarker research including discovery (shotgun proteomics) and validation (targeted mass spectrometry, MRM) studies and we are equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometers (e.g. Thermo Exploris 480 with FAIMS). In addition, we use highly sensitve immunoassays such as ELISA, Simoa or Ella in our biomarker research. Our work includes both the application of already available assays and the development of own assays. Together with collaboration partners, we also apply proteomics to study mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases in preclinical models or clinical samples.

The group is associated to the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases Ulm (DZNE) via the group „Translational Mass Spectrometry and Biomarker Research“ led by Patrick Oeckl (https://www.dzne.de/en/research/research-areas/fundamental-research/research-groups/oeckl/research-areas-focus/).
