Skin tumour centre receives seal of approval

The aim of the Ulm Skin Tumour Centre, which was founded in autumn 2009 and has been certified according to the guidelines of the German Cancer Society since March 2010, is to treat skin tumours in line with guidelines and across disciplines according to the latest scientific findings.

The seal of approval, which has been awarded to fewer than 35 skin tumour centres in Germany to date, guarantees guideline-compliant diagnosis and treatment for skin cancer patients. "Our dermatooncological senior physicians PD Dr Margit Huber and PD Dr Lars Alexander Schneider have special additional training and many years of experience in surgical and medical skin tumour treatment, and specially trained oncology nurses know the needs of skin cancer patients," explains Prof. Dr Karin Scharffetter-Kochanek, Medical Director of the Skin Tumour Centre and Director of the Clinic for Dermatology and Allergology. "Under the umbrella of the Integrative Tumour Centre, the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Ulm (CCCU), we work closely with other disciplines such as surgery, internal medicine and radiotherapy."

Sophisticated diagnostics are crucial for skin tumours, which are guaranteed at the Skin Tumour Centre, for example, through the highly detailed histological examination of tissue samples in dermatology, computer-aided photo documentation and detailed spread diagnostics - the latter in collaboration with radiology, nuclear medicine and other specialist disciplines. The centre offers treatment within clinical studies for all patients for whom innovative forms of therapy are being considered.

In order to be able to offer patients treatment and aftercare from a single source, the Skin Tumour Centre works closely with doctors in private practice and takes care of the social and psychological needs of cancer patients in collaboration with the Social Counselling Service, the Bridge Care and the Psychosomatic Consultation Service at the hospital. The specialists at the Skin Tumour Centre pass on their knowledge in training and information events for doctors and patients. Quality management controls all these processes. Dr medic. Julia Ferencz, Quality Management Officer at the Skin Tumour Centre, oversees them. "Our clinic team is delighted that we have received the seal of approval from the specialist association for our work. Due to demographic developments and sun-oriented leisure behaviour, skin cancer is on the rise and we must continue to improve prevention and treatment," says the medical director of the centre.
