Treatment places with centralised monitoring are available in the CPU. It is physically attached to the general internal medicine emergency department M1b, so that comprehensive internal medicine emergency diagnostics and treatment are available. The CPU is looked after by doctors from Internal Medicine II around the clock, seven days a week in shifts, which enables competent care of complex clinical pictures at any time of the day or night. In addition to the doctors present on the front line, senior physicians specialising in "Internal Medicine and Cardiology", "Internal Medicine and Angiology" and "Internal Medicine and Pneumology" are available at all times.
The German Society of Cardiology (DGK) has been defining quality criteria for CPUs for some time. If the required high standards with regard to structural and personnel requirements are met, a clinic can be certified by the DGK. The CPU at Ulm University Hospital successfully passed the certification process back in 2010.
