Bornavirus infections detected in hedgehogs for the first time

A new publication in Emerging Infectious Diseases reports the first detection of Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) infections in wild hedgehogs in Germany.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the Veterinary Neuropathology group at LMU Munich and the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, with involvement from our institute. The findings expand the known host spectrum of BoDV-1 and are particularly relevant for handling neurologically affected wild hedgehogs from endemic areas.
