LATEST INFORMATION on the Relocation of Diagnostic Services from Günzburg to Ulm

As of 1 July 2026, the diagnostic services of the Institute of Neuropathology will be fully located at the new site at TTU Ulm.

Further information on this can be found here.

Welcome.

Welcome to the Institute of Neuropathology at Ulm University Hospital!

On the following pages we would like to give you an insight into our institute, our specialisations and our tasks in patient care, research and teaching.

With precise modern diagnostics, innovative research and committed teaching, we contribute to a better understanding and treatment of diseases of the nervous system in close co-operation with our clinical partners.

We cordially invite you to familiarise yourself with our institute and our work.
We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and provide you with a professional dialogue.

Our laboratory acceptance times are

Mon - Thu: 8:00 - 15:30
Fri: 8:00 - 14:00

You can find our current submission form and download information here.

Please register all native/unfixed submissions (e.g. frozen sections, cerebrospinal fluid, fresh material) as early as possible by telephone: 0731 500 - 65 910

NOTE: As of 1 July 2026, neuropathological diagnostics will be carried out entirely on the premises of Ulm University Hospital (Oberer Eselsberg, TTU/M28 building).

Please send tumour tissue for frozen section diagnostics and/or cryopreservation natively and as quickly as possible by courier to our premises at Ulm University Hospital.

Cerebrospinal fluid samples should be received by Neuropathology Diagnostics at Ulm University Hospital within 1 hour of collection in order to ensure good assessability of the cytospin preparations. In order to enable special staining in addition to standard staining according to Pappenheim, we ask you to send us approx. 3 ml of native cerebrospinal fluid. At high outside temperatures, it is advisable to cool the samples during transport, but not to freeze them.

If rapid transport of native cerebrospinal fluid samples is not possible, unstained cytospin preparations may also be submitted.

Intestinal and nerve tissue should be sent natively together with a moist swab soaked in 0.9% NaCl in a plastic container (so-called moist chamber) quickly by courier to our premises at Ulm University Hospital.

For muscle biopsies, please contact the neurology muscle laboratory.

Please refer to our details page for further information on posting and medical care.

Research

The Institute of Neuropathology at Ulm University Hospital was founded on 1 January 2026 and is led by Professor Friederike Liesche-Starnecker as a place for modern and future-oriented neuropathological diagnostics, research and teaching. From the outset, we have pursued a clear digital focus: our approach is characterised by end-to-end digital workflows in patient care, the structured use of image and diagnostic data in research and innovative digital teaching and training formats.

At the same time, we are building on a rich academic and clinical tradition in Ulm. Neuropathology was most recently established as a separate section within the Institute of Pathology at the University Hospital and provided high-quality neuropathological diagnostics under the leadership of the current deputy head of the institute, Dr Anja Osterloh. In addition, Ulm is historically closely associated with internationally pioneering contributions to research into neurodegenerative diseases: The Braak stages and the Thal phases of amyloid-β deposition are among the neuropathological concepts used worldwide, which were decisively co-developed here and have had a lasting impact on Alzheimer's research.

Our institute is part of a strong scientific network with a focus on neuroscience in Ulm: the site of the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is dedicated to research into ALS, frontotemporal dementia and other diseases of the nervous system. The DZNE works closely with the university and university hospital to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Ulm is also home to numerous interdisciplinary research networks and special research areas that create important synergies in research into the nervous system.

With a strong historical foundation, a vibrant scientific environment, and a clear vision for the future, we are excited to continue shaping neuropathology in Ulm together with our clinical partners and scientific colleagues.
