Molecular and Familial Tumour Board (MoFa)

The Molecular and Familial Tumour Board (MoFa) is the heart of the ZPM Ulm. Here, the results of molecular diagnostics are jointly analysed and discussed by an interdisciplinary panel of experts consisting of oncologists, radiologists, human geneticists, molecular pathologists, bioinformaticians/systems medicine specialists, molecular biologists and pharmacologists (optional). It is discussed whether certain molecular changes in the tumour can form the basis for a therapy or whether there is a possibility of inclusion in a therapy study.

Procedure of the Molecular and Familial Tumour Board

Registration of patients:
In the case of external practitioners
, by sending the required documents to the CCCU secretariat by fax or post. Alternatively, patients can be seen in person at the relevant university outpatient clinic at Ulm University Hospital (UKU) by appointment.
After the patient documents have been checked for completeness, registration at the MoFa is carried out by the staff at the ZPMU.
In the case of internal patients, this is done by the doctors at the UKU.

Initial presentation at the MoFa: Recommendation of molecular pathological and genetic diagnostics. Participation of regional practitioners is possible via video conference.
After the initial presentation and after each re-presentation in the MoFa, a board decision is made after approval by the head board physician.

Re-presentation at the MoFa: Evaluation of the findings after the analyses have been carried out. If a treatment rationale is present, a treatment recommendation is issued. It is also checked whether the patient can be included in a clinical trial.

In the case of an off-label therapy recommendation:
In the case of internal registration, a standardised cost coverage application is submitted by the ZPMU.
In the case of external enrolment, support from the ZPMU is optional.

Therapy is carried out after approval of the application:
Internally at the UKU.
Externally usually by the co-operation partner, alternatively at the UKU.

Re-presentation at the MoFa:
If therapy is implemented, approx. every 3 months for therapy evaluation.
