Course on Leadership and Professional Skills Development for Early Career Psychiatrists


We are honoured to announce the Course on Leadership and Professional Skills Development for Early Career
Psychiatrists led by Professor Norman Sartorius and Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft in Ulm, Germany. 

The course will take place from the 11th-13th of June 2026 and is organized by the University of Ulm and Bezirkskrankenhaus (BKH) Günzburg.

The course will aim at developing the participants’ leadership and professional skills. It is a great opportunity to learn from two of the world’s most prominent and influential psychiatrists on how to make presentations and posters, read and write scientific articles, prepare a proposal for a project, produce a curriculum vitae, chair a session and also how to deal with other challenges young psychiatrists and mental health researchers face. The course will help participants to work better with colleagues, supervisors and students, and will increase competence, confidence and satisfaction at work.

The course will be held by Professors Norman Sartorius and Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft.

Professor Norman Sartorius

President, Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programs, Visiting and Associate Professorships at the Universities of London (UK) New York and St Louis (USA), Zagreb (Croatia) Beijing (China), Member of the Council of the World Psychiatric Association, Chairperson of the Section on Comorbidity of the World Psychiatric Association.

Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft

Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, working in a community mental health team to support homeless mentally ill people in South London, and Professor Emeritus of Community Mental Health, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, UK.

The training is tailored for 16 young psychiatrists within 2 years before or 5 years after the end of their specialty training. Participants from associated fields are also welcome (e.g. early career researchers in the field of mental health, psychologists).

Participants must be fluent in English language. The course will be highly participatory. Participants will be expected to prepare an oral presentation and a poster.

Date: 11th-13th June 2026 

Location: Ulm, Germany – Villa Eberhardt

The course will start in the morning of the 11th June and will be completed in the evening of the 13th June.

Attendance throughout the entire course is mandatory.

The course is free for the selected participants.

Participants must pay for travel and accommodation on their own. We can assist you in finding affordable housing.

Deadline for application is 30th of November 2025.

Fluency of English will be confirmed via online video-​calls before selection.

Participants will be selected by Professor Norman Sartorius and Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft.

Those selected will be notified by the middle of january 2026.
