Cancer represents one of the deadliest diseases of our century. Tumor cells are characterized by the ability to grow uncontrollably, change their shape, acquire invasive properties and to spread through the blood stream to other parts of the body where they form metastases. Our lab is committed to investigate various aspects of tumorigenesis and tumor progression of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) and aims at characterizing the role of crucial signaling pathways controlled by several protein kinases.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled PhD student (m/f/d) eager to engage in the highly competitive field of intestinal microbiome-epithelial crosstalk. Our research group, headed by Prof Thomas Seufferlein, has long-standing expertise in critical illness-related trauma research with a particular focus on intestinal barrier dysfunction, supported by the Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 1149 
"Gefahrenantwort, Sti:irfaktoren und regeneratives Potenzial nach akutem Trauma". The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. med. Viktoria Hentschel (specialist for internal medicine/gastroenterology) and Dr. hum. biol. Milena Armacki (molecular biologist), to enhance the understanding of the immunomodulatory potential of probiotic sEV and possibly harness this knowledge as an adjunct treatment option for IBD patients. 
The successful candidate will investigate the impact of defined probiotic species-derived sEV in an ex-vivo murine colonic organoid model of inducible epithelial trauma and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action. In parallel, the PhD candidate will construct a patient-personalized organoid co­culture model of colonic inflammation for translational use. 
The PhD position is funded by the Advanced Clinician Scientist Programm at Ulm University.
